Lanchester

August 2017 | Barratt David Wilson Homes

PJO Archaeology has been consultant to Barratt David Wilson Homes for a proposed development at Cadger Bank, Lanchester. The site lies adjacent to the Scheduled Monument at Lanchester Roman fort and is close to Dere Street, the main Roman road to the north. A desk-top assessment suggested that there might be remains surviving on the site of the civilian settlement (vicus) around the fort. Evaluation excavations to a brief by PJO Archaeology, in agreement with Durham County Council Archaeological Officer, were undertaken in February 2014 by Durham University Archaeological Services. The excavations indicated that the site probably lies on the periphery of the vicus. Following refusal of planning permission in 2016, PJO Archaeology was appointed to make a witness statement on the archaeology of the site at an appeal hearing in July 2017.
